How can I share my family tree?

Share your discoveries with family and friends using the ‘Share’ button in your family tree view.

Share your family tree now

There are two ways that you can share your family tree.

1. Invite friends and family

Send a unique link to a friend or relative allowing them to view your family tree. You can remove their access at any time, so you're always in control.

When inviting someone to view your family tree, you'll need to assign them a nickname so you can easily keep track of who has access.

Each link you share is unique. If you want to share your family tree with different people, they'll all require their own link.

You can choose whether to share your entire family tree, including people marked as living, or just those marked as deceased. If you change your mind after sharing, you can always update your sharing settings.

What information will the person I’m sharing with see?

Anyone with a unique link to view your tree will be able to:

  • View all deceased people in your family tree
  • View facts about deceased people in your tree (except any facts that disclose information about living people)

Depending on the settings you’ve selected, they might be able to:

  • View anyone in your family tree who is living, or not marked as deceased

They will not be able to:

  • View any facts that you’ve marked as private about living or deceased people
  • View any media or photos, whether you’ve marked them as private or public
  • Edit any information on your tree
Can I change what people can see?

You can edit access permissions for any link that you’ve shared, adding or removing the ability to see people marked as living in your tree. You can also revoke access entirely for any unique link. You can make these changes on the tree settings page, under sharing settings.

2. Share a temporary link

Send a temporary link to someone that will expire after seven days. They'll only be able to view people marked as deceased in your family tree. You can share the same link with as many people as you like.

What information will the person I’m sharing with see?

Anyone with a temporary link to view your tree will be able to:

  • View all deceased people in your family tree
  • View facts about deceased people in your tree (except any facts that disclose information about living people)

They will not be able to:

  • View anyone in your family tree who is living, or not marked as deceased
  • View any facts that you’ve marked as private about living or deceased people
  • View any media or photos, whether you’ve marked them as private or public
  • Edit any information on your tree

You can check what people with the link will see by pasting the link into your own browser first.

The link you shared will expire automatically after seven days, but you can share a new link with the same person, or anyone else, whenever you like.

Can I restrict access to my family tree when I share a temporary link?

Each link you share expires automatically after seven days, so you don't need to worry about managing access rights. If you want to control access to your family tree, invite your friends and family instead.

If you change your mind and don't want anyone to be able to view your family tree, you can make your entire tree private in your tree's settings. Any links you have already shared will stop working once you make your tree private.

If you want to make your tree public again, just wait seven days for the links you already shared to expire before updating your tree's settings.

For both sharing options, when you are ready to share your family tree, just copy the link to your device's clipboard, and then paste it into a message to whoever you want to share with - like an email or WhatsApp message. They’ll need a free Findmypast account to view your tree. We’ll ask them to log in or sign up once they click on your link. It's simple, safe, and secure – just head to your family tree to get started.
