The Liverpool & South West Lancashire Family History Society

The Liverpool & South West Lancashire Family History Society (L&SWLFHS) was originally founded as the Liverpool Family History Society in May 1976 by a group with common interests in tracing their own ancestry through personal research and exchange of information. Liaison with the record office was established to seek advice on the locality and use of local archives.

As the membership of the society grew, other branches were set up by members residing outside Liverpool, but within the Liverpool Diocese and the historic area of the West Derby Hundred. These were St. Helens, Southport, Skelmersdale, Leigh, Warrington and Widnes and a special interest group for those with Anglo-Irish ancestry. In 1981 it was realised that members based in and around Liverpool itself, were the only group unrepresented in the society and the Liverpool branch was set up with its own local committee.

The society aims to encourage those with an interest in family history and genealogy in this area. It provides a forum for people to meet and help each other through educational facilities and a programme of talks, visits and other activities. It also produces a quarterly journal.

Other services include the transcribing and indexing of material relevant to these interests and the area, is a member of the Lancashire BMD Project, provides constant updates to a searchable surnames list and has a members' interests directory.

Liverpool & SW Lancashire FHS links with other societies of a similar nature through membership of the North West Group of FHS and the Federation of Family History Societies.
