The Master of the Horse was the head of the Royal Mews and had charge of all matters relating to the Sovereign's stables, including the provision of horses, carriages, and latterly vehicles, and responsibility for the transport of the Royal Household as it moved from residence to residence.
Staff in these recordsd include coachmen, helpers, chauffeurs and footmen (although from 1920 footmen were transferred to the Master of the Household's department).
Historically 'mews' were a range of buildings where birds of prey, used for hunting and sport, were kept during their moulting season. The name carried over after the buildings changed use to house horses and carriages, and later, motor vehicles.
