Peter Pemberthy
by Dianne Rigby
Story 119
My grandfather was one of the original Anzacs he serviced in Anzac cove he lost his ear when he tried to protect his mate who was killed beside him. His name was Peter Pemberthy.
I don’t know much about him as after the war my grandmother left with my mother who was 13 at the time and never saw her father again so I have no photos, I don’t even know what he looked like but years later I tracked his burial place to Echuca and went to his grave side. I wish I had known him from what my mother could remember of him I feel as though I did know him and I am proud of him for giving up his life to make this a better place for me and my children and grandchildren.
