About HALS

HALS is the principal archive repository within Hertfordshire. Over 3 million documents dating from 1060 to the present day are stored on five miles of shelving at County Hall in Hertford.

As well as the ecclesiastical records showcased on findmypast.co.uk, the office preserves original documents covering many aspects of life in the county, including the environment, businesses, institutions and societies. Among these can be found title deeds, minute books, letters and diaries, manorial documents, financial records, maps, plans and photographs.

In addition, HALS' reference library holds a vast collection of books, newspapers, and periodicals. The online indexes to their newspaper collection, wills, poor law and criminal records contain over 700,000 entries which can be searched through 'Hertfordshire Names Online' via the website
