Oxfordshire Family History Society

We are pleased to be working in partnership with the Oxfordshire Family History Society.

Oxfordshire Family History Society was founded in 1976 to encourage and promote the study of family history. The society caters for those with Oxfordshire ancestry and those who live locally but with ancestors from elsewhere.

The main aims of the society are to foster interest in family history, and aid the progress of beginners; to provide, through publications and meetings, a means for exchanging news and information; to widen knowledge of the variety of genealogically useful records; to help preserve the most commonly used records by transcription, indexing and publication; to record fast disappearing monumental inscriptions.

The Oxfordshire Family History Society has contributed to the National Burial Index. This collection allows you to delve into more than 12 million burial record for England and Wales to help you uncover your ancestor's burial place, year of death and religious denomination.

Additional information from the society

Meetings are held on-line via ZOOM throughout the year and include talks about researching techniques as well as ‘local’ history to place ancestors in context. The society's AGM is normally held in June with a Family History Fair held in the Autumn.

The Big Oxfordshire Names Database (BOND) brings together the transcriptions and other data sources we hold in one searchable resource.

The society runs an active and responsive help-desk service alongside face-to-face advisor sessions in numerous libraries around the county and in the Oxfordshire History Centre. The advisors cover a wide area of expertise (not just in Oxfordshire records).

The Oxfordshire Family Historian, which is published three times per year, enables members at home and further afield to enjoy general articles on family and local history, general genealogical information, events and activities of the society.

The society's website contains access to free resources and a member’s area where members are encouraged to submit their own stories.

The Society is a Registered Charity, No. 275891, and a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.
