After the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the Roman Catholic Church was outlawed. The church could no longer operate in the traditional structure. Catholics were not allowed to worship openly until the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1791, and then full Catholic Emancipation came in 1829, when all civil restrictions were lifted. Catholics were allowed to hold office, sit in Parliament and build churches. The late 19th century saw a dramatic increase in the Catholic population as a result of the mass immigration from Ireland during the Famine.

The Catholic hierarchy in Scotland was formally restored in 1878 by Pope Leo XIII, marking the end of centuries of missionary administration. The pages of the Scottish Catholic directories preserve the names of the bishops, priests, and religious who guided the Church through this pivotal period. With the creation of two ecclesiastical provinces, the Church entered a new era of growth, overseeing the rapid expansion of Catholic schools, parishes, and seminaries across the country.
