The Supreme Court of North Carolina is the state’s highest court, it originated with the State Constitution of 1776, which empowered the General Assembly to appoint Judges of the Supreme Courts of Law and Equity and Judges of Admiralty.

There are no further appeals from the Supreme Court’s decision on matters of state law. The Supreme Court sits without a jury and the court makes no determinations of fact, the court considers whether an error occurred at trial or in judicial interpretation of the law.
