With each result, you will be able to view a portrait of a Harrow School portrait. In some cases, there are group photographs of students together.

Harrow School, an independent boarding school for boys, was founded in 1572. Among its alumni of Old Harrovians, it can claim Prime Ministers, Members of Parliaments, artists, poets, scientists, actors, and more. The photographic portraits of students found within this collection were originally captured by Hills & Saunders. Findmypast has been able to add additional supplemental information about each student from the Harrow School Registers such as father’s name and clubs.

Within the collection you will find some notable names:

• Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin

Stanley Baldwin was the British Prime Minister from 1924 to 1929 and was succeeded by Neville

Chamberlain. The image of young Stanley Baldwin was captured between 1881 and 1885.

• Eric Tremayne Buller

After his time at Harrow School, Buller became a decorated major in the British Army. He enlisted with the Devonshire Regiment in 1915. He was also a known cricketer and played for the Army. The transcript linked with Buller’s portrait explains that he was a member of the cricket club at school.

John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort

Viscount Gort had an extensive and decorated military career. During the First World War, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the military’s highest medal. During the Second World War, he commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France. He also served as the High Commission for Palestine and Trans-Jordan, then the Governor of Malta and Gibraltar. Vereker’s school portrait was captured between 1900 and 1903.

• Walter Napleton Stone

During the First World War, Captain Stone received the Victoria Cross. He served with the Royal Fusiliers. In November 1917, when his company was under attack, he was able to relay valuable information back to headquarters, which saved the line. However, Captain Stone was killed during the attack as he fought until the end.

• Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer

Lord Spencer was a British peer. He served in the British Army during the First World War as a lieutenant, aide-de-camp, and then rose to the rank of captain. During the Second World War, he was the Honorary Colonel of the Anti-Aircraft Battalion of Northamptonshire Regiment. Lord Spencer was the paternal grandfather of Princess Diana.
