What can these records tell me?

The baptismal register of the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam and New York is one of the city’s richest genealogical resources, especially for the early colonial period. In 1901–1902, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society published a transcript of this register, from 1639–1800, in two volumes which form Volumes 2 and 3 of its published Collections series. The indexes included in these volumes cover fathers, mothers, and witnesses, but not the names of the children (or adults) who were being baptized. To remedy that omission Harry Macy Jr. compiled this index in 1996 for the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. The index covers the initial period from 1639 throughout the second Dutch administration in 1675.

This record set includes images of the index created by Harry Macy Jr. You may be able to discover the following information:

  • Child’s name
  • Sex
  • Father’s first name(s)
  • Patronymic name (derived from a male ancestor’s name, often a father’s name)
  • Surname
  • Mother’s first name(s)
  • Mother’s patronymic/surname
  • Year

Additionally, there is a searchable version of these records located in the Useful Links & Resources section.
