What can these records tell me?

The Province of Manitoba records marriages, along with births and deaths, as part of their Vital Statistics Agency. They are responsible for administering and enforcing the "Vital Statistics Act," the "Marriage Act," "The Change of Name Act," and processing disinterments under the "Public Health Act." The database contains information from 1882 to present day, depending on the limitations set out in each of the above acts. In this database, you will find marriages that occurred more than 80 years ago.

Most entries will include the following details:

  • Registration number for the marriage
  • Location of marriage
  • Date of marriage
  • Groom's first and last name
  • Groom's place of birth
  • Bride's first and last name
  • Bride's place of birth

You can also often find:

  • Groom's mother's first and last name, often listed as her maiden name
  • Bride's mother's first and last name, often listed as her maiden name
