The Free Church of Scotland was founded in 1843 following a major schism in the established Church of Scotland over the issue of patronage – the right to appoint ministers to vacant parishes. Within a short space of time, the Church of Scotland lost over a third of its ministers. The Free Church was particularly strong in the Highlands.
