Leonard James Shaw
by Dorothy Phyllis Pearson
Story 87
This is my husband's great uncle Len. He must have been a hero, I know all the family think of him as one. LEONARD JAMES SHAW was the son of John Shaw and Jennet Waddell Walker. Born 08 Aug 1885 at Tauwhare, Scotsman's Valley, [so named after his parents].
He studied for mining certificates and after a period in Waihi went to Wellington where he was an assayist in the Dominion Laboratory. He went to Gallipoli with the 2nd N.Z.E.F., was wounded, returned home, became a commissioned officer, went to England and was killed in action near Baupaume in France.
Uncle Leonard sent home a poppy from Flanders to his parents in New Zealand; the 'Poppy' is presently on loan to the Auckland War Museum.
