Christmas is the perfect time to make a start on building your family tree and we're here to help.
Each day from St. Stephen's day to New Year's Day we'll be giving you hints and tips to help you make the best possible start to your Irish family tree. We'll have charts, interview guides and plenty of advice to help you along the way.
To help you even further we're giving a 10% discount on all subscriptions until January 1st allowing you to take advantage of some of the almost 10 million records available on findmypast.ie. Click the button below for you discount (you must be registered and signed in though).
That's not all, we’re also setting you a festive challenge during Start Your Family Tree Week. Each day via our facebook, Google+ and twitter we’ll post a question for you to answer. At the end of the week we’ll ask you to send all your answers to support@findmypast.ie with “SYFTW Entry” as the subject line, to be in with a chance of winning a 12 month subscription to findmypast.ie, a €200 voucher for Amazon and a family history research package with Eneclann to the value of €360! We’ll also be giving away spot prizes such as family history assessments, books and findmypast.ie credits to those who get involved via facebook, Google+ and twitter, so don’t be shy and you could be in with a chance of winning....
St. Stephen’s Day is the day most of us spend visiting our extended family. Bring this family tree chart with you and fill in as much of your relatives as possible. Use this handy interview guide to get the most valuable information you can.
Once you've extracted all the information you can from your relatives, take a trip to the National Archives website. This site provides free access to the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Ireland, the best sources for taking your first steps into family history research.
Now that you’ve spoken to your relatives and checked the censuses take a look at our records on findmypast.ie. The best place to start is our main search page, try a broad search first, then narrow down your results by year and county.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the records? Take a look at our help and advice sections which provide some great background info on genealogy in Ireland as well as more information on all the records we have and how to find the information you need in them.
Need more help? Try our forums, where you can post questions or respond to others who’ve hit brick walls in their research. Experts regularly log in and answer questions so help is always at hand.
Before celebrating New Year’s Eve take a look at our Irish Prison Registers. Perhaps you’ll find a jailbird in your family tree? They feature incredibly detailed records of everything from turnip theft to armed rebellion.
On New Year’s day take some time to fill in all your details on our free findmypast family tree and show it off to all your relatives.
