The island has been inhabited since before 6500 BC. Isle of Man is known as Ellan Vannin in Manx, the native Gaelic language of the island. It has a rich Celtic and Viking history that can been seen today in the Manx language and Viking place names. Since 1765, Isle of Man has been a self-governing dependency of the British Crown. As a dependency, the United Kingdom is responsible for the Isle of Man’s defence and represents the island in international affairs. Its capital city is Douglas.

If your ancestor was born towards the end of the year, it is possible that their registration will be found in the following year. For example, both Maurice Ernest Gibb and Robin Gibb were born on 22 December 1949, but their birth was not registered until 1950. Their older brother, Barry Alan Crompton Gibb, can also be found in the records. In 1958, the trio formed the pop music band, Bee Gees. They enjoyed decades of success, especially during the disco era of music. Their hit records include Tragedy, Words, You Win Again, and Staying Alive and Night Fever (both featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). They sold more than 220 million records worldwide, won numerous awards and appear in multiple halls of fame.
