Derbyshire Workhouse Records

These workhouse records contain an index of names for the reports of the relieving officer of the Derby Board of Guardians of the Derby Union Workhouse. The Derbyshire records cover the short period from June 1842 to December 1842, but include 2,235 names and associated information.

Workhouses were there for the able to work but unemployed and their relatives, the incompetent poor, the elderly, sick people, orphaned young people, single mothers, and the mentally ill. Some people only stayed in the workhouses when employment was available, while others spent their entire lives in the same workhouse.
